Some images more specific to the areas of concern will help. At the moment I’m not immediately recognising the engine from the angle of your shot, may be an Aspera but the cowling doesn’t look right, so maybe a JAP?

Brick and Patio Cleaner; this is a weak Sulphuric Acid
Most of the proprietary brick cleaning products are Hydrochloric acid based, not Sulphuric. It should be noted that when diluting any acid it should be added to the water and not water to the product. Long gloves, full face protection, and do it out side in the fresh air!

Your image relates to the engine so are we to assume that it’s engine parts that you need ? However if it’s Sisis chassis parts try Dennis Sisis themselves, google them.
Engine parts could be tricky. Unfortunately, until recently Meetens Ltd would have been the first port of call but have ceased trading. Their stock has been taken on by L&S Eng…[Read more] -

Unfortunately I’m unable to open the file that you’ve posted. Can you not just reduce the size of the original image?

Not sure about Bandmaster but Flymo took over some of the Norlett models and sold them in orange. If you can post an image of your machine I will have a look through some of MT Flymo parts manuals and see whether any bear a likeness.

wristpin replied to the topic Can anyone identify this mower? in the forum Grass Cutting Machinery 3 years, 4 months ago
It’s a 24” Hayter Scythe with an Agricultural / forestry, compliant guard kit. We used to refer to them as “wheelbarrow Hayters”. Usually with a Mk15 Villiers which was mounted on two oak blocks to get the shaft height right as the height of cut was adjusted by raising or lowering the complete cutter spindle and blade carrier. Both sides of the…[Read more]

Has it ever run in your possession ? Any chance of an image of the whole machine, I’ve only ever seen Champions with Briggs engines so presumably yours is an early model.

Unfortunately I don’t have the correct shade of gold paint to touch up the letters,
Not gold leaf then?
All looking good. I hope that when it goes to its resting place there will be some acknowledgement to all your hard work, as in “ restored by” and perhaps a photo montage of “as found and progress”.

That’s progress. As Trusty has suggested, having the shoes relined is the way to go. Back in the day we used to get the shoes from all our commercial vehicle units and trailers relined and it was a 24 hour service . Not familiar with your side of the water but there’s plenty of heavy transport, construction, forestry and wind farms etc, that mus…[Read more]

An inward smack may break the rust bond to get things moving. An old socket or a bit of your box section, end on will concentrate the smack close to the shaft. Also, turn the crank to position the key way to 12 o’clock and squirt a bit of proper penetrating fluid into it, in the hope that it may creep along the key and around the shaft. I say p…[Read more]

I doubt that Ransomes dealers will have the parts you need but try Bartrums Mowers, I think they bought all of the Ransomes stock of Motor Triple parts when they had a clear out.
There you have it from a man who’s done it !

I’ve had poke around my collection of old manuals and the best I can come up with is the attached for a Mk2.
Thinking about your broken spring theory, it could also be a seized shoe pivot or even a detached lining. keep us posted. -

The last time I worked on an MT was about 40 years ago, but I think that you are on the right track. The drum may need a bit more persuasion.
However, there is someone on this forum, Trusty220, who may be able to impart practical knowledge. -

These would be made from a special alloy as they are the wearing part of any cylinder and if you get it wrong it reflects badly on the whole machine
The difference between the characteristics of various manufacturers’ blade materials is very apparent when regrinding cylinders, both in spark colour and sound. Two examples from domestic m…[Read more]

The old thing is slowly giving up its secrets. I presume that Allett have a record of the original buyer but is there any information of its life in service? Re the Ransomes identification letters on the spirals, is it dangerous to suggest that Allett may have used complete Ransomes cylinder ?

Always a good idea when an engine has been standing and before you try to turn it over, to remove the plug and squirt in a good dose of lubricant, wait a while, then gently turn it a few degrees back and forth. If it moves feely, go for a gentle rotation, then refit the plug and proceed as normal. A good precaution against ring damage etc if a…[Read more]
