You’ve given the model and type numbers – fine, but pls add the final code number which will date the engine. Trouble is that there are so many variations which can be difficult to follow in the manuals. The code number may help.

Going back to your first post and your search for Stoic parts, and in particular a rear wheel, there is a possible pitfall. There were three models of Stoic, 3.5hp push, 5hp push and what you have 4hp self-propelled ( power driven). So, if you are looking for a donor machine for a rear wheel , it needs to be a Self-propelled one so as to get the…[Read more]

It should drive on both rear wheels. With the chain running in line the sprocket should drive the solid axle running across the back of the machine and driving both wheels via sprag bearings pressed into their hubs. The sprag bearings grip the axle to propel the machine forward but allow it to be pulled back in use. If the cross axle is turning…[Read more]

Briggs flywheel keys. From the 1983 Service Update Seminar. In standard form the Stoic had a carrier disc with three rigidly bolted blades. The carrier disc was fitted to the engine crank via a hub with two protective friction discs and clamped with a bellville washer.

A rare beast looking in exceptionally good condition complete with the even rarer “coffee grinder starter”. When I started my business in 1981 they were almost extinct and when I retired in 2012 – non existent .
Look after that one ! -

That’s how I would expect it to be as the “second shaft” would have been removed when the engine was specified for cable operation. Your “ pre loaded” spring is the governor spring which deals with variation of power demand while the machine is working . Just set the tension on that spring to give 3000 rpm at full no load throttle. In use the g…[Read more]

From your model and type numbers it appears that the correct part number for the governor spring is 260902, and the top no load setting should be 3000 rpm.
The 260902 is shown as still available with a retail price of £8.16 inc vat.Section 5 of the manual, page 25 of the section shows using a simple home made tool to “ tweak” the spring anch…[Read more]

`The governor spring is shown on that fig 56.
Re your comment about no getting full throttle – butterfly wide open. Being a governed engine it will not be wide open if it’s reached its governed speed. The engine Type number will give the governed speed for your application. If I get a mo, I will dig out the appropriate micro fiche – and the r…[Read more] -

Your code number shows that it was made in 82 so the post 81 manual applies .
The second rod is included in the standard build engine assuming no remote throttle. If you have a cable throttle it is likely to be as per the insert illustration as in 56. – always assuming that your machine has not been re-engined. If I come across one still in place…[Read more] -

I should add that in fig 56 of my last post, there is a rod with a letter A and a rotation symbol . That is for a “ universal” engine with no remote throttle. If yours has a cable throttle control, that rod will not be present.

Sounds like your Briggs man was less than experienced or just not interested !
The main issue is that there were several variations in the set up for the 13 series 5 Hp throttle / governor linkage. The main difference being between those with the throttle cable clamped to the carb on top of the tank and that clamped to the tank support bracket,…[Read more] -

Atco 8/30 could be an original Atco , in which case it will be getting on a bit and may be problematical for parts; or may be a “ modern” Atco which is a re- badged Stiga. If it has a Briggs and Stratton engine, look at the Model, Type and Code numbers on the engine and the Code will tell you it’s approximate age. ( always assuming it’s not bee…[Read more]

No image reaching here! However I’m guessing that either you have the wrong blades or the right ones assembled incorrectly . When there is a central gearbox the inner tines are usually curved in towards the centre to avoid leaving too wide an uncultivated strip.

A friend has an aged WH with an Onan twin engine. We’re investigating a charging issue .
Instead of the usual regulator / rectifier with the two outer terminals for the AC tails of the stator winding and rye centre one for the DC feed to the battery, it has one of the outers bonded to the centre. Can someone explain the theory of this ? -

My “ garden shed” is a concrete panel garage with a corrugated roof – plenty of gaps for mice to find a way in. Other than traps etc , does any one know of a substance for discouraging / preventing the little blighters from chewing rubber components such as fuel pipes and primer bulbs?

Shame to sell it , lovely and original
Yes, unmolested and useable, but there comes a time in life when it’s better that they go to someone who will enjoy them, than gathering dust in the shed.
I enjoy sorting them more than hoarding them. -

From a job lot sold off from a closed mower business. Had been sharpened and I’ve made some front rollers and freed off a sticky kick start ratchet, then an oily rag all over. Mid 50s I think. Starts, drives, cuts and will be for sale when I’ve finished playing !
