I have to say I have never, well not yet, broken a fork or spade handle. That could be because the ones I use are old Elwell tools, this is a make well worth looking out for at car boot sales etc. I am a firm believer that the older tools, like many other things, were of far better quality in years gone by. The modern trend seems to be to make items down to a given price.

The photos confirm it is like the wheelbarrow in the photo I posted.
I see the makers plate lists several patent numbers but can’t read them. It might be worth looking them up.

Good progress. You will soon have it tuned up and ready for a bit of lawn mower racing!

We are a horticultural and garden machinery club so would not really have knowledge of Lister D prices. You would be better to contact a stationary engine club.

A photograph of the engine will help confirm make and model and ensure correct information is supplied.

The Howard Bantam had several different engines over the years. Early models had a Villiers Mk25c, later a Howard AC engine was fitted. Other engines included BSA, Villiers 4 stroke B&S etc.
A photograph of the engine on your machine will help identify it. A 2 stroke can usually be identified by the lack of any means of adding oil to the sump (crankcase) as petrol 2 strokes rely on the oil in the fuel mixture for lubrication.

The split pin is there to stop the rings turning in the groove. As a 2 stroke it is important that the ring gap does not line up with any of the ports in the cylinder bore, this could happen if the rings did not have the split pin to prevent then moving.

To remove gudgeon pin (wristpin) remove the clips part number 10297, see parts manual plate 2 for illustration.

The break in the piston is probably where the broken ring came out. It would be worth cleaning the piston to see how bad the scoring is. You will need new piston rings, not sure if the break in the piston will cause ring failure again as ring will not be supported by groove in piston at that point.
