Are you bringing it to Lotmead again this year ?
A really impressive tool !

sidevalve44 replied to the topic Pegson Marlow water pump not drawing. in the forum General talk and discussion 8 years, 10 months ago
Thanks for the suggestions.
The total lift is only about 1 metre or so, well within its capabilities. The hose is very rigid (too rigid really, makes fitting it very difficult), no problems there. However, the Union is made of nylon and has begun to get a bit worn. Water was dripping out past the threads.
As far as I can remember, there is no…[Read more]

Just recently, my Pegson Marlow 1.1/2″ centrifugal pump has been reluctant to draw any water.
When working, it will pump several gallons in a few seconds but now there does not appear to be any appreciable suction.
The impeller is turning and there is a tiny bit of suction, evidenced by air bubbles in the bin I was pumping into, but not enough…[Read more]

Hi Owen,
Yes, It’s done about 20 hrs since fitting and has been excellent. Now it is properly run-in, it pulls like a steam train !

Feeling quite chuffed. The old B&S 3hp that was originally on my Wolseley Wizard has been rebuilt.
The original pulsa-jet carb was used to get my water-pump going so, it needed a new carb.
A complete motor with correct carb was obtained at the COEPS sale in November and the various parts purchased (gaskets, air-filter, piston rings etc.,) Valves…[Read more] -

Well pleased with my 1960 Pegson-Marlow/B&S water pump. Not been used since earlier this year and started first pull. Used it today to drain the ditch on my allotment. It filled two dustbins in a matter of minutes. With the suction hose well submerged the water comes out with surprising force but, due to the shallowness of the ditch most of the…[Read more]

Thanks wristpin. I have just looked on Briggsbits site again and noticed that a tool very similar to yours is still available. It would seem I should have ordered both tools; one to dismantle and one to put it back together again !
As I’ve managed to dismantle them I won’t be needing one straight away but, will certainly add one to my tool-kit in…[Read more]

Thanks, that’s really helpful. No wonder I was getting so frustrated !
Is your “hooky” thing a B&S item or one you’ve made up yourself ?

sidevalve44 replied to the topic Briggs & Stratton valve collars in the forum Help and information 9 years ago
Any suggestions on how to use it when dismantling would be appreciated. It seems a rather big tool to fit easily in the comparatively small valve chest and between the coils of the springs.

Was letting off steam really. I can see how the compressor would work well in re-assembling. My issue is in dismantling. You have to insert the compressor between the collar and the spring and close enough to the top of the spring in order to compress the spring sufficiently to remove the collar. Problem is the gap between the coils is very small…[Read more]

When I restored my 1960 3HP B&S fitted to a water pump I found removing the valves quite easy. Compress the collar and spring and pull out the little pin; re-assembly was quite easy too.
The 1976 engine I am re-building however, has no pins but, the collar has an elongated hole. I am sure there is a good engineering reason why B&S changed the…[Read more]

Thanks guys !
Supplier wanted silly money what with postage etc., So, have now put piston back on using the old clips. They were hard work to get back in so, I can’t see them coming out on their own.

I have read that one should not re-use piston (gudgeon pin) circlips.
Whilst I can understand that in high performance two stroke engines, would it really matter if I were to re-use them in a Briggs & Stratton 3HP, are they really likely to jump out ?
Not being cheapskate, just wondering. ( I forgot to add them to my spares order !)

Sorry to hear that Alan. Pity there are so many dishonest people out there.
My machines are stored in a steel motorcycle garage and are all chained together.
It wouldn’t be impossible to nick them but, like you i think it would make things difficult for them.
My worst nightmare is arson.

I can remember having seen in the cultivator a small machine that can cut/trim edges. Had 4 wheels that could be altered in height on each side and a B&S engine.
Can anyone advise what it was called as I am on the look-out for one !

Hooray, great news !
I remember once, a chap I knew stripping the carb and just about everything else on Royal Enfield 500. He said it had a newish plug but, it still wouldn’t go. I gave him my spare and it started straight away !

Thanks for the offers guys but, the cost of other parts needed far outweighs the value of the engine. This engine was well and truly knackered.
I’d rather spend the money on something I can actually make use of.

John Cruse has no BSA Ignition parts left in stock.
Have now decided the engine will cost far more than it’s worth to overhaul and will probably sell it as spares.
