If you engage forward gear and turn engine over, if the inner castellated hub is turning then all you need to do is follow my advice above. The photos show first the forward drive ratchets then the pawls which allows the machine to reverse.

Great news Alastair!
Regarding your drive problem, have you checked to see if the ratchets and pawls are engaged between the hubs and wheels? For forward drive both ratchets need to be engaged (they’re the ones with springs on them). In addition if you permanently engage one of the pawls (the ones which are just on hinges) it will engage reverse t…[Read more] -

Iain, reading back over the posts, your “bang, bang,” might imply timing. Did you really mean you’d set it to spark at TDC? If so you need to set it to BTDC. Don’t know the exact setting for your application but I’ve attached a front photo of a SIMAR. The two round marks on the flywheel case are about the right distance apart.
Other than that I mi…[Read more] -

Iain, here’s a link to Sean’s excellent restoration of a 56 which you might find useful if you haven’t already seen it.
There’s a lot of information on magnetos and where he got parts from. Or, just a thought, there’s a few cheap series A’s on that auction website at the moment with good sparks which you could get the coil from.

Thanks Charlie you’ve come up trumps again!
Sorry forum was misleading, chap has seen a video of mine on YouTube and keeps messaging there. He’s uploaded a short video of his plough here

A chap on another forum has a 56 plough. Serial number as above. Not yet persuaded him to join here, in meantime Charlie would you be kind enough to provide date and details of first owner? Thanks Peter

Thanks Charlie
I’m slowly getting them all sorted out over winter. If it keeps going this well I’ll have to buy some more machinery, otherwise I’ll have done all the fettling jobs that were supposed to keep me busy when I retire! -

Those of you at Weeley last year may have witnessed the 50’s pathetic attempt at tilling. I’ve finally stripped down the carb and thoroughly cleaned it and the fuel pipe. I’ve nowhere to test it under load but initial results are promising with much more fuel getting through. We’ll see if my optimism is well founded at Stanfield! As a bonus I…[Read more]

Hi Gerben
I’ve hopefully successfully sent you the manuals. Let me know if you haven’t got them.
I sold my F80 some time ago. Sorry, no idea where you can get spares now.

Sorry gents, I must have been asleep the last couple of days. My hitch is like your photo, John. The plough is also similar. Andy, you’ll be pleased to hear I tried the plough floating and the results were quite good for a complete novice. Seems best fixed for opening then floating after first four passes. She went like a dream at North Elmham. H…[Read more]

Thanks Charlie. Hitch and plough of my machine are not like that, so presumably not a genuine SIMAR item.

Yes Tom, I had noticed the spelling, I expect it happens to you as much as me. In the past I’ve been referred to as Mr Goat and Mr Rat!
I think the 56 plough I have belonged to you some years ago. The set up looks very similar to yours in the photo. Would you know if the plough fitted to mine is a SIMAR accessory or from somewhere else?
Thanks

Excellent day and the SIMAR ran perfectly, 4 hours ploughing completed. Here’s a view of the event, great turnout, classic and vintage tractors and a decent number of horticultural machines.
