Lars,
Excellent work and looking good.
The pipe from the tank to the fuel pump was originally copper. The end at the tank would be direct fit to the in tank filter via an angled connector and the fuel pump end would have been fitted with a banjo connector soldered to the pipe.
The pipe from the pump to the carburettor would be flexible.
I can…[Read more] -

Congratulations on your purchase.
I am recognised as the supplier of parts for the Ransomes crawlers and would initially make the following observations.
The carburettor is not original for an MG5 but from a later MG6. Some consider this a better carburettor Amal 356/1.
The engine appears original MG5 as the fuel pump has the low mount but the…[Read more] -

Derek,
I have never seen this done but guess it is entirely possible with some extreme work.
The biggest stumbling blocks are that the rear panel of the MG5 chassis is integral whereas the MG6 is removable although you may be able to leave the back in place and just remove the lift pulley bracket etc. and attach the MG6 plate at the rear.

Graeme,
The correct one is iron. I have these available. Alloy ones often fail.

Graeme,
Colour Tune is a special spark plug with a viewing window that allows you to view the combustion in the cylinder. I have never used it on this type of engine but can allow you to adjust mixture and view the spark under compression. If you follow the idea from Rhys you will obtain a similar result. If you think the engine lost…[Read more] -

Richard,
The original bands were probably spring steel but these are likely to be expensive to source. I suggest using stainless steel as this will have minimal stretch under load and more than serviceable for show and light use.

ransomes256 replied to the topic Ransomes MG6 Drayyon Diesel – Engine oil recommendations in the forum Ride-on machines 10 years, 11 months ago
Steve,
There are suppliers of the oils available but you must ensure you use a straight oil and not a modern multi-grade as these contain detergents to keep dirt in suspension for the filter to take out. The drayton engine only has a strainer filter so will not capture this dirt and can cause damage to bearings etc.Neil

SAE oil does not have the EP (extreme pressure) additives. The additives can attack bronze and brass components in some older gearboxes / overdrives where tolerances are critical. No such problems with the Ransomes plus the only extreme pressure gears on the tractor are in the main gearbox which is designed to use the same oil as the engine.

ransomes256 replied to the topic Project: MG6 restoration in the forum Ride-on machines 11 years ago
The engine and the main gearbox should be filled with a straight oil, 40 weight is ideal. Do not use a multigrade as these have detergents which keeps any dirt in suspension and as the engine only has a strainer filter (not a paper filter) the suspended dirt would return to the bearings and cause early failure.
Air filter can use a modern oil 0w15…[Read more] -

Dicky,
As identified by Rhys it is probably the speed being to fast but may also be weak clutch return springs or excessive wear in the clutch shoe pivots.

Has anybody any contacts for manufacturing glass fuel filter bowls? I have been quoted some silly prices to get a small number manufactured from samples.
Thanks

Dicky,
I have already responded to you that the MG5 is not fitted with a Sturmey Archer engine but Ransomes’s own. The SA was only fitted to the MG2.

If you have an MG5 the engine was not manufactured by Sturmey Archer but by Ransomes themselves as the SA engines were only fitted to the MG2.
I can suppply both dipsticks. drop me a mail at njarrett@btinternet.com -
