Looking at the engine number, 2AC12766CS, I would say it is a JAP 2A, dating from 1948. See this webpage for how engine numbering works.

Welcome. The Rotoscythe engine may not be a Villiers, I know early Rotoscythe machines used a Bux engine.
If you could post a photo of your Monrotiller and if it has it the machine number I can date it and give you some more information. Monrotillers are my speciality. It might be worth starting a new forum post for the Monrotiller.

In the absence of any spec for the battery I would suggest factors to consider are physical size, location of terminals and Ah capacity, as large as possible. I am not sure how the use will impact on type of battery ie traction motor rather a car battery which needs to start the engine and is then charged by the alternator.

The Barford literature does not have dates apart from the price lists. The Barford Power Scythe leaflet has rev 12.58 on it and the printers ref is EJJJ 10970.2.60 CP which could be Feb 1960.
The serial numbers on the two Power Scythes are :-
    403-C5 with engine number 998A 28025
    926-C9 with engine number 998A 44857

The one I have was electric start, but I have not bothered replacing the battery which died years ago. It has the screw type height adjuster.

What is vintage? A 1980’s machine could be 30-40 years old now.
If this mower is that old then it is in very good condition.

It may be worth contacting Hayter with the machine serial number they may be able to help.
I have a very similar machine which I still use, not in such good condition.
