Two Marquises, one 20” and 18” advertised locally. Both with grass boxes .
Both were undercover but the 18” appeared to have been standing in a swamp – front rollers rotted away and their shaft oval and wasted. Stainless steel pipe over the oval shaft and rollers from the odds collection fixed that.
Rear roller rusted, cracked and wasted away.…[Read more] -

I can remember the “ good tool “ story as well !
While on the JLO theme I can remember seeing at a show a Hayter 21 or Osprey fitted with a big vertical shaft JLO. Not sure whether it was an aftermarket conversion or a Hayter option for bank work. -

Yes they were Bosch magnetos. There was a special tool that screwed into the centre of the flywheel to pull it off the crank. Annoyingly the points gap had to be set with the flywheel in place as the cam was part of it. The “ windows” in the flywheel provided to give access fot feeler gauge and screwdriver, never seemed to be in just the right pla…[Read more]

Back in that time AlKo made a domestic tractor shaped ride on with a unique grass collection system. I know that it existed as a customer had one, but I can’t find any literature showing it.
The machine had a fairly conventional twin bladed deck ejecting to the right but then it got interesting. The ejected grass fed into the base of a conveyor b…[Read more] -

Just to add to the jig saw, JLO were eventually acquired by Tecumseh! Quite a lot of their larger engines were to be found on generator / welder sets and at full chat really sang.
The Bing carbs on the GT2s were rather prone to throttle spindle / governor wear and I only used my last rebuild kit two or three years ago – might still have a spare spindle. -
wristpin replied to the topic Flymo Professional in the forum Grass Cutting Machinery 1 year, 8 months ago
That one is Definitely a GT2 ( some badged Contractor) with a JLO engine which was available with or without the wheeled undercarriage . The original Flymo Domestic had an Aspera TA633 engine a metal fuel tank, fibre glass hood and an alloy impeller. Next came a similar machine , Aspera VA633, plastic tank and impeller and plastic (ABS?) hood.…[Read more]

16 thou is correct but it was always important to make sure that the the points faces were flat and square to each other for a setting that would “last the season”. I remember having to go out to Mastiffs that had lost their spark mid season .
Bad news that the carb is in a mess. Hope that it’s not too worn and drawing air around the spind…[Read more] -

You don’t identify the engine – SRL xxx ? However back in the day many of the MAGs fitted to Mastiffs etc were equipped for electric start or lighting even though that wasn’t fitted. So, as you say coils – in the plural, you probably have a surplus charging coil.
Identify the ignition coil with the HT plug lead and probably a single primary coi…[Read more] -
wristpin started the topic Leaking fuel taps in the forum Pedestrian operated machines 1 year, 10 months ago
It’s that time of year when some of us discover that the cork plunger in a Ewart fuel tap has shrunk. Someone that I know says that he revives them by immersion in boiling water but I’ve never had much luck. Before anyone says that one should remove the plungers and keep them wet over winter, I know, but …….! I’ve noticed that Villiers Parts cla…[Read more]

With all the info that you’ve been given you should be ok but if not take your existing belt to a local bearing and transmission part ( belt) dealer and get them to match it on their measuring gauge.

Take a pic with the tank in position – and the throttle cable so that we can see whether it’s connected at carb level or down at the lower end of the tank support bracket. It would also help to know what machine the engine is fitted to, one of us may be familiar with that particular set up. I’ve worked on dozens of 5hp 13 series horizontal cra…[Read more]

Unfortunately the first image is rather out of focus and it’s not easy to see what’s what. The second two are duplicates and not helping much.
Can we have a general view of the tank and carburettor showing as much linkage as possible – not too much of a close up so that we can see the relative positions of the linkages.
Where abouts are you loc…[Read more] -
wristpin replied to the topic Ransomes Lightweight land roller in the forum Pedestrian operated machines 2 years, 1 month ago
I regularly overhaul neglected Marquises with seized rear rollers and have developed a method using a few homemade tools. Most seizures result either from no lubrication at all or from being greased which has dried out in the roller bearing passages and prevents further lubrication. The roller bearings should ONLY BE OILED , not greased.
Remember…[Read more] -
