I would guess late 50’s on P 185, 70YoGM there’s a picture of a similar model by Allman (Rapid Mk5) with a B & S engine, says it was mid-70’s. Engine and pump on top of tank, though….

They really work well for bouting (ridging) up. father used to ridge the whole plot after rotavating in the autumn, then leave it for the winter, we had clay soil. In the spring it would be rotavated again ready for planting…

I think it was probably the other way round as the Cyclo was introduced in 1956 and Merry Tillers first appeared in 1958, I’m not sure when the Merry Tiller cutter bar came along….

There was a small motor scythe on the horticultural section of the Selwood Steam Rally over the bank holiday. The owner thought it was a Shay but I’ve looked it up and it’s a Cyclo, made by Cylinder Components of Birmingham. Introduced in 1956 it had a Villiers Mk 2g 70cc engine, there were two models, III H,with Jalo-type non-powered wheels and…[Read more]

There’s a braking arrangement with a bit of bent rod which your set-up won’t have.

I saw a Bullfinch sold at the Somerset Tractor Show in January, this one has a loop handlebar (my picture has cut the bar off but the cross bar is lower) but the data plate showed that it was a Bullfinch. I take it that the loop handlebar was used on early machines. My Bullfinch has different handles (like yours) which I presume is later.

I went over to Bratton, Wiltshire at the weekend (April 23rd & 24th) where the informal vintage gathering is held. I met a very nice couple who had bought some garden machinery and they took away a membership form. They had bought a Merry Tiller post 1971 (white engine) and Truck like mine, a Colwood RA and from their photo’s I was able to…[Read more]

From this it is a type 28, which was fitted to a Qualcast Powered Panther mower. It has an Amal 369/5, 5/16″ choke, 25 Jet, 36″ cable and 3/4″ clip. There are a lot of variations from the standard O type. But the mag is the same Wico I 1263.

I was given a couple of merry Tiller chassis last year, Phil Murrell gave me one at Ardingly, the other came from Moggyjim in Swindon. I had been looking for a Clinton engine and got one via our favourite on-line auction from Launceston in Cornwall.
Here are some pictures…
