Evening all,
Had a very productive hour in the shed tonight, wheels are off, hubs are off and…………..drum roll please……….the dratted engine is finally seperated from the gearbox!!!. Thanks Charlie, chisel and wedges, and off she came.
One of the hubs meekly succumbed to a few taps, the other caused a bit of a ‘brown trouser’ moment,…[Read more]

Just a couple of pictures of the machine so far, hopefully putting some context to my ramblings.
As always, I didn’t take any pics of the machine as acquired (too distressing!!).
The pictures show the fuel tank and cowl/air cleaner, both in nice condition, just needing a good clean and an oiling.
The rotor box: again in nice condition, no rot,…[Read more] -

That’s brilliant, thank you Charlie!.
As they say, one seeing is worth a thousand tellings, I’m going to need to split the gearbox to properly clean away the rust and gunk, and to replace/repair the broken clutch release lever so if you could send me the photo’s, that would be great. Could you send them to my email, then I can save them onto a…[Read more]

If you’ve been following my thread in ‘pedestrian machines’, you’ll know about my rather sad Monrotiller. If not, a quick recap:
I bought a series 3 Monrotiller which Charlie has dated to 26/6/1963. Unfortunately it turned out to be somewhat worse than it looked, no spark, no compression, shot tyres and a gearbox full of water. And to put the tin…[Read more]

Just a quick one Charlie,
Once the nuts are off the four studs, should the engine just pull off, or is there something inside that needs to be released, the engine is rocking on the studs but doesn’t want to pull forward.I’ve got the rotor box off, and it doesn’t look like its seen a lot of work, there may be hope…………….

Thanks Charlie,
Its encouraging to know the gear is supposed to be that shape.I’ve got the four nuts off the engine, its just the ‘sticktion’ holding it in at the moment.
I think my plan of attack is going to be to pull it apart into the main sections, flush the gearbox out so I can see what I’ve actually got, and then take it from there.

Any tips on removing the free wheel units from the shaft (lock nut is off), or is it a case of heat and beat?

I presume the gear visible in the picture isnt supposed to have teeth that shape?
This sorry fiasco does however speak volumes about the quality if Geo’ Monro’s paint shop, from the condition of the outside, no one would suspect that the machine has clearly lived in a ditch for some time.
Charlie, I received then manual, and the offer of advice,…[Read more]

Another inspection in the cold light of day, and it doesnt look any better!.
Took the spanners to it tonight, the engine refused to budge, so I decided to remove the gearbox top………take a look at the picture to see what I found.
Aside from a vile, rusty, gungy, water-filled mess, the bracket that hold the clutch cable is broken off.Oh…[Read more]

So tonight I have given my ‘prize’ some closer inspection.
It is serial number 334603, the rotors turn when the engine is turned and……………… nope, thats all the good bits I can find.
No spark, no compression, magneto backplate is broken, exhaust rotten, gearbox full of water, wont engage gears, both tyres cream-crackered, cables…[Read more]

Afternoon all,
I know there is already a monrotiller thread, but I didnt want to hijack someone elses, so I’m starting a new one.I have just acquired a series 3, unfortunately it is a bit more ‘tired’ than I thought, so firstly, could someone point me in the direction of a manual?.
I haven’t looked too closely yet, but on initial inspection, it…[Read more]

The whole assembly came apart almost disappointingly easily!
The whole freewheel assembly is a big rusty mess, so i’ve left it to soak for the weekend, then next week I’ll try and pull it apart and see whats what.
Thanks for the help Gents. -

Thank you Gents,
Wristpin, pushing/pulling the mower with engine stopped and drive engaged resulted in only one roller half constantly locked, regardless of direction of travel.
And Stuart, one roller was impossible to stop, the other one never gets any drive.
So I think ’tis cream-crackered!. It appears that one freewheel has seized up and the…[Read more]

The drive mechanism itself appears to be working, it is impossible to stop the roller turning whilst drive is engaged. The problem is with excessive ‘wheelspin’. I thought it may have been due to the level of wear in the rollers, so I have just replaced them, but found no improvement.
Whilst inside the roller assembly, on the main shaft are two…[Read more] -

Morning all,
A question for the mower mechanics. I have a Hayter Harrier 56 that struggles to pull itself along. The slightest resistance and the roller starts spinning, I can hold it back with one finger!. Any ideas where to look? Nothing is dragging on the ground, the belt is new and everything is greased as it should be. One thing I have…[Read more]
