Gosh, it’s been Four months since I last posted.
A lot has happened to my MG5 since then.
The track support rollers have been overhauled (I used hard chromed hydraulic ram steel for the spindles and Sintered bronze bushes)
All the sub assemblies have been overhauled and now I am looking at the track drive and idle rollers.
Can anyone tel me the…[Read more] -

Yes, I have priced new gears, but funds are limited and I have already spent far more than my wife is happy with!

I think I will have to find a doner unit.
Hopefully in better condition.
As I have already overhauled the Engine and gearbox I don’t feel I can abandon this now.
On a brighter note, the differential gearbox and the steering breaks don’t appear to be in to bad condition.
I live in hope! -

Thanks for the help.
The frame is now off, the track support rollers removed and the final drive gearbox and drive hub stripped.
Mmmm! I have a lot of work and expense ahead.
I don’t think any oil or grease has been used in the last 20 years.
I am going to have to rethink this project.Silverfox

The overhaul of my MG5 is continuing.
I have removed the tracks and track support rollers.
I am now trying to remove the Track outer frames.
Can anyone advise the best way to do this?
They seem to be very tight on the supports.Thanks.

Things are progressing well. I have decided to replace the bevel pinion shaft, bearings and the two smaller gears in the reduction gearbox.( thanks to Neil)
When setting up the Preload of the Timpken bearings I encountered a problem.
Can anyone advise me of the correct setting for these bearings?
The old bearings were quite worn and the nuts and…[Read more] -

Well, after a lot of swearing, use of Fox wedges and pry bars, I have managed to remove the PTO dog clutch cover. Then all the balls fell out of the bearing!
Mmmm. Well it needed replacing anyway.
Just need to pull the dog from the shaft now.
Next I have to remove the bolts securing the gearbox to the differential casing?
Any help/advice on…[Read more] -

Hello Dave.
Thanks for your kind offer, but, I have a copy of the spare parts manual.
The drawings don’t really give much information on stripping sequence.
I will have another try tonight.Regards

Good morning all.
Well, the engine is complete. Only the cowling requires sandblasting and painting.
I am now starting to investigate to reduction and differential gearboxes.
However. The cover on the reduction gearbox is reluctant to come off.
Can anyone advise me of the stripping sequence for the gearboxes?
At first glance everything looks in…[Read more] -

Well, the rebuild has started.
I bored out the main bearing on a milling machine.
Allowed 0.002″ clearance.
Can anyone advise on the end float on the crank shaft?
I have 0.005″ but I think this may be a bit tight.
ThanksSILVERFOX

OK, so the crank has been re-ground and after trying to flush out the Oil gallery with WD40 and compressed air I had to remove the plug.
MMMM, quite a job. Ended up welding a nut to it and using an impact gun.
Glad I did. Found a lot of old carbon deposits.
I hope to start the rebuild next week. Can anyone tell me the torque for the big end…[Read more] -

Thanks for the info on the brass mesh.
Made a new suction filter today.
The crank is away for grinding and the broken foot on the crankcase s being welded.
Things are progressing.SILVERFOX

The next problem is the oil suction filter located in the sump.
It has been damaged in the past.
I may be able to solder up the tear, but it is a bit distorted.
A replacement will have to be fabricated.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of a small quantity of Brass mesh? -

The big end journal mikes at 1.865/1.864″.
Is this the standard size or a regrind ?
As for the exhaust port—- I may have to bore it out and sleeve it back to the original size.
It’s quite badly eroded.

The engine is cleaned and stripped.
Not in bad condition.
The big end bearing journal is in good condition, but I will replace the shells and the main bearing.
The valves require re-seating but are usable.
The timing chain is a bit stretched and I will replace it.
The main problem is the exhaust port.
How is the exhaust pipe fitted to the…[Read more] -

OK. The engine is out and in my workshop.
The clutch and flywheel are removed as is the magneto, carbureter and fuel pump.
Fount that the magneto had been repaired in the past. It may require a replacement cap.
It’s still far to heavy for me to lift.
The engine number is MGE 3828. -

I will repair/weld the broken mount and then machine it down to the same hight as the other 3. Unless the frame is distorted this should be OK.
But if not feeler gauges and some shims will give me a secure 4 point mount.
“Soft foot” is often a problem when using a 4 point mount.
Does anyone know the tolerences for misalignment between the motor…[Read more] -

I now have the engine unbolted and ready to lift out.
Found a couple of surprises.
A broken engin mount. This has been repaired using Angle iron bolted to the crank case.
Luckily I have a pal who is very good at welding aluminium.
Also how do you split the centrifugal clutch?
It is not seized and is free to turn. I have split the drive after the…[Read more] -

Hello Lynn.
You seem to have been unfortunate to say the least.
Do you have any pictures? If so please can you post them on the forum.
Also, Scotland is quite a big place. Can you give an indication of your location?
I worked for an Agricultural engineers for a few years about 15 years ago.
We came across the odd Wheel Horse tractor.
