Like last year, a brilliant week-end. Much enjoyed giving the Howard and Wizard a workout. Even tried my little Atco 14″ but the grass was too tough. It’s crackly exhaust added to the 2 stroke noise from the SIMAR present !
Attached are a selection of photos that give a flavour of the atmosphere, including troublesome Trustys !!

Hi Jim,
What time will the farm be open to on Friday evening ?
I’ll be bringing a couple of machines over then and a couple on Saturday.
See you then.

Here is the homemade toolbar I have made for my Howard 200.
I have used the front and rear parts from a scrap rotary hoe gearbox and bolted them together. Then using some gash angle iron and a length of 25mm sq section bought on-line I bolted it all together. The attachment was picked up the COEPS spring sale in April, I think it might be David…[Read more]

Welcome to the club !
I have a Howard 200 as well, probably a Bulldog. Mine has a Kohler 4HP engine retro fitted. Bags of grunt !
The Suffolk engine would be woefully underpowered for this machine. You will also find that the Howard belt won’t fit as the pulley on yours is not the correct twin pulley type and is not the proper diameter.
You…[Read more]

Jon Cruse sold his last one last year !
I know DH Day of old, he sometimes brings Flywheels into where I work to have them re-magnetised. He is also rather eccentric !
I’ll try and find someone who can test it for me (cheaply) If no good I’ll find a coil rewinder.

I might be doing it wrong but, when I tried a resistance test it read nothing.
Bear in mind, it is at least 60 years old !

I will give them (Mower centre) a try.
I have Donald Day who is local, am concerned that it might be prohibitively expensive to rewind, that’s all. Have no idea what work like that costs.

I have now stripped the BSA 120cc that I removed from a Howard Bulldog.
It is in need of thorough overhaul. All the parts I need are available from Meetens except for the ignition coil and points.
Does anyone know of a potential source for these parts or a way round the problem. I am reluctant to spend £250 or so on engine parts if the thing…[Read more]

sidevalve44 replied to the topic Briggs and Stratton Carb. in the forum Pedestrian operated machines 9 years, 8 months ago
It might be worth considering an Amal Motorcycle carburettor. I guess the ZZ is about 500/600cc which means the jetting for an old BSA M20/21 would be a good starting point. Spares are easy to get from Burlen Fuel Systems or Hitchcock’s Motorcycles.

Took advantage of today’s lovely weather and rotovated the allotment. The soil was a little claggy but not too bad.
The Wizard with its 5.5hp Villiers (Chinese Honda copy) made light work of the conditions and left a well turned over surface.Thought I’d try a back to back comparison though and dragged the Howard out to go over it again. Its 4hp…[Read more]

I may well try the bit of wood technique. The head is off at present but won’t take a few moments to put back on (that’s why I love side-valves!) Yes, you are correct the starter pulley should unscrew, it’s partially unscrewed at the moment but is a bit rusted up. The engine has had a hard life, it’s on +.040″ on the piston so, no more rebores…[Read more]

I’ve removed the cowling and there are no tapped holes visible. However, The starter pulley is threaded onto the crank and that needs to be removed before I do anything. I believe, as s1g has said, that there are some holes behind the metal plate that is immediately behind the starter pulley but, I need to remove that first !
Holding it from the…[Read more] -

I am stripping a BSA 120cc that I have removed from an old Howard 200.
I need to remove the flywheel to access the ignition and to remove the crank assembly etc.,
So, any advice on how to do this would be appreciated.
1) How do you hold the flywheel to stop it turning as there are no convenient flats to wedge a bit of wood under or holes to…[Read more]

Those of you with long memories may remember that my Kohler engined Howard 200 died immediately after the Lotmead Farm working week-end. My tendency to always assume the worst had me thinking broken rods, slipped flywheels and all sorts of maladies.
I have at long last got round to looking at it and happy to report it is now running again. The…[Read more] -

Who says old and restored machinery should be kept unused and polished up ? Here’s my 56 year old Pegson Marlow water pump in the shed at the allotment after helping to remove hundreds of litres of water from the drainage ditch !
Have now run out of bins to pump into so, will have to let it soak away. -

I have begun the servicing of the 12″ ATCO with 79cc Villiers 2T engine I bought a few weeks ago. (see my posting from 2.1/2 weeks ago)
The machine is very good overall condition. However, not having a service manual is proving a problem.
I want to change the points but, they appear to be behind a brass cover which is screwed on from the inside…[Read more]

Had a successful day at yesterday’s Cotswold Oil Engine Club’s Autumn sale.
Came away with a very old ATCO 12″ with Villiers Midget 2 stroke (a runner) and an old Howard 200 with BSA Engine (non runner). The ATCO starts and runs quite well but the whole machine needs a good service. The Howard is for spares and maybe getting the Beeza going.

Although I have not had time to look at the Kohler engine on my Howard 200 since it expired at the Lotmead Farm w/e I am beginning to think it may actually have sheared its flywheel key.
So, how easy is it to remove a Kohler flywheel ? I believe a strap wrench is the necessary tool. Tried Meetens but he was unable offer a Kohler one and suggested…[Read more] - Load More
