From memory with these, the l-shaped handle should rotate, handle tip facing left as viewed from the handlebar end should be neutral, tip vertical should operate the rotor blades, tip facing right should engage rotor blades and wheels together.
Hope this helps. -

Thanks Alan, I posted them on the road, Jr driving Commer at 40mph produces 95 decibels according to my Ipad, must have rattled the brain!

Sorry to suggest something so simple, prompted by your description of “polite cough”. Are you sure the throttle is open far enough and operating properly on the carb end?

Sorry Charlie, I’ve now had a better look, its 6239.
Apparently it hasn’t been run for more than 20 years, the machine belonged to the grandfather of the late husband of the lady I bought it off, and has been in storage since, but it has compression and appears fully complete so hopefully its fixable! -

Well, after some delay, have finally got round to collecting my latest acquisition. 120 miles each way in the Commer, now on the return leg at 45mph top speed….
Simar not currently a runner and might well appear later this year as a project! Serial number 623, any info Charlie. -

Just back from a great day out, this is developing into a really large event, great range of all types of machines. Nice to be able to say hello to lots of members of the VHGMC, we really are a friendly bunch, just how a club like this should be. Thanks to all involved in organising, I’ll certainly be a regular from now on.
PS does anyone know…[Read more] -

Hi Robert.
From looking on the net it seems the SC12 is basically a modernised Mk12. I have a very old Villiers manual for the Mk12 series which you are very welcome to have, its a bit tatty but readable. I think from what I have read that your SC12 might have electronic ignition, so I don’t know if it will help you. Are you going to Stanfield…[Read more]

Couldn’t get there last year, really looking forward to this one!

Looks like Issue 29 is already out Charlie. I read it second hand from my good lady, so that would tally. The one I referred to is definitely issue 28, has photo of Hedera Helix on the front and heading “Frost and follies in N. Yorkshire”. Possibly some newsagents will still have 28.

Just read a very interesting article in Issue 28 Jan/Feb Landscape magazine. Collector of hand tools has a comprehensive collection of vintage items, good size article with lots of photos. Well worth a look if you’re turned on by stuff without an engine!

My late father and mother used to dig around 5 acres by hand every winter when they worked for a market gardener. Effectively it was the only work for them to do during the winter, and there was no hurry, so they just paced themselves. As soon as the boss died father took the market garden over, bought the Honda F80 with a plough and never dug the…[Read more]

Now, Aspera, that takes me back. If I remember right my late father had a total of 3 200’s over the years. By far the shortest lived was the Aspera engined one which only did a few seasons. Replaced with a Honda engine which went on forever….
