Hi all.
I have a restored wheelhorse C-125 tractor and I’m curious to know if it could be registered here in the UK to make it road legal?
I’d like to use it on a community project I manage and that would involve driving on footpaths and on roads so to be legal I would need insurance, and to get insurance for the road I’m told it must have a…[Read more]

Hi all.
The park I volunteer at recently revealed they had a grass cutter in a shipping container. When I opened it up there sat a very sad LX277 ride on tractor mower.
Flat tyres, flat battery, put away wet and apparently not run for five years.
They bought it and did not dare drive it for some reason.
Is it worth spending time and effort…[Read more]

I went straight to the horses mouth and write to Ransomes Jacobsen direct.
Their technical department were brilliant, replying promptly.
The belts are routed the way I suspected, tensioner pulleys on the inside of the belt.
The sprocket is a left hand thread but will be tighter than a crab with lock jaw. At least I know which way to try and…[Read more]

I have rebuilt the cutter head and changed the drive belts. But I’m not sure how the belts should be routed around the tensioning pulleys. The wheels drive belt was just about wrecked and I think it was routed wrongly before i stripped it. I’m not even sure it’s the right belt.
My assumption is that the tensioner pulleys sit inside the belt and…[Read more] -

My Allen scythe has a villiers 11c engine, the one prior to the 25c.
Mine has a midget carb but the 25c has a Junior carb I believe.
The Allen manual explains setting the timing etc so it may help you with your machine.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for the link. I had looked on that site but had looked for verge cutter. When I searched on multimower, Bingo! Detailed operator and service manuals.
I’m struggling with the mower head layshaft sprocket, not on a key, no grub screw, no end bolt to secure it. But the exploded view looks like it might be threaded onto the shaft?…[Read more] -

Shows what a modern version of the machine it is, with handbrake and deadman lever that cuts engine when released.
Started to strip it this morning. Split the cutter head off the drive unit so I can service it separately. It is indeed a heavy lump.

I know, I thought I’d seen this one with a flail reel on the front but I was mistaken.
Got it home and when the safety switches were all set it fired up second pull!
Blades turn, drive works, even the handbrake is working.
Got her in the workshop and I will start a service in the morning. Oil fuel etc changed and see what all the belts are…[Read more] -

Mine was scrap because of the degree of rusting. I sweated the soft soldered filler neck out and can use that when I fabricate a new one. For now a plastic auxiliary tank for a night heater off Ebay will do. 4.5l capacity for a few quid.
Cutters are razor sharp and very robust, it will cut 1 inch thick hawthorn stems.

Somehow I thought this was a flail mower but it’s a cylinder. Will it handle rough stuff?
I’ve got a manual off line but I’m not sure if it’s right for this model, have to have a look tomorrow.
Just need an engine manual for the GH250 Kubota engine in case it needs major work.
All in all it looks a beefy thing and I’m hoping it wont take much to…[Read more] -

What kind of engine is it?

All back running again now. Looks good and I cant wait to try it on some grass verge.
Only issue is wear in the pivot pin for the cutter head, it wont affect operation too much but ideally it needs a new pin and barrel to make it right.

Hi Wristpin.
It’s a 2001 year of manufacture so quite a modern version.
I go to collect it on friday so I will know more then.
Looks in good order but there is always the possibility of something being wrong with it.
I will keep trying for a manual but the one you sent is a good starter for me.
I’ll give her a good service and oil change before I…[Read more] -

Hello all.
I’ve just bought a 2001 Ransomes 76 Reel cutter.
I’d like any information about the machine that may help in refurbishing it and get it running well.
I saw a previous thread but there was no information.
Is there any chance of finding a manual or operators handbook?
I read that it’s a very capable machine. This one has a Kubota engine…[Read more] -

Well, all parts have arrived.
I can start fitting the carb and throttle cable. The fuel tank is about shot so I’m going to use a plastic one to get things running, then make a new metal one as and when.
I stripped out one of the cast iron blade inserts and it’s not a big job to make new gauge plate blades if required.
Upwards and onwards

Found that SAE 30 classic car engine oil is best for the transmission box, 5 litres for 24 quid and it took a couple of litres. Rest I can use as 2 stroke mixture.
Rebuilt the cutter head and need to adjust the pads to give me proper cutter blade pressure.
After looking at it rebuilt I decided to add an extension to the handle as it is about six…[Read more] -

Looks like I have a 3/4 model carb from a motor cycle. Not made for the allen scythe. So I will get the proper one for the job.
Today I rebuilt the handles, had to make three new studs as the old ones had been left slack and been bent or worn.
Repaired the clutch lever and reset it all and it works great.
Wheels are back on so we are not far…[Read more]

Charlie, that was so good of you to make that enquiry, thank you.
It’s great to put an age on my machine, I had an inkling it was pretty early.
They went on into the seventies I believe, I wonder what the last production number was.
I will be buying the carb service kit and throttle cable next week, hopefully getting her running.
I’m going…[Read more]
