You are a very lucky boy!.
As for the finish, normally I would say leave it alone, just oily rag, but given the rarity I think there is a good case for a factory finish restoration.

The term ‘working weekend’ (in my case anyway) was a bit of a misnomer, more like ‘not working’, ‘fix in the field’ or ‘startyerbas**rd’ weekend!!

I’ve had good service from a company called ‘diesel Bob’, if I recall, they are in Lancashire.
I remember sending him some injectors from an allis chalmers, he stripped them, then phoned with a breakdown of the parts needed and costs before doing anymore

I can’t see why it wouldn’t work, in principle. Someone is bound to have tried it at some point.
I do think stones/big bits of stick may well bring proceedings to a pretty abrupt halt!

Hi all.
Progress on 551 has been non-existent of late, mainly due to it being cold, dark and wet (and a lack of beer tokens!).
Currently at a bit of an impasse waiting for it to warm up a bit so I can do some painting.
