Hi Geoff.
The Australian oddity, is in fact a Wolverhampton oddity!, It is a John Shaw ‘Governer’ mad in Wolverhampton in the early thirties I think. Watercooled 2 stroke engine fitted to the end of the cutting cylinder, they made other more conventional mowers too.
I know where there is one, or where there was one not sure if it has moved on.Chris

hortiman started the topic Are there any members visiting the Dorset Steam Fair this year in the forum General talk and discussion 9 years, 10 months ago
It will be good to meet any members visiting the GDSF this year. We have a club marquee display adjacent to the horticultural working area, all members welcome to pop in for a chat, and maybe a cup of tea.
It would be good to have a visit from club officers!!!
2016 is my last year looking after the club stand, volunteers needed for 2017 onwards.Chris

Dave.
If you read the Club magazine, you will see that we have a Clifford expert, in the helplines section, Paul Coles, who lives in Kent. he has reprints of most manuals, and I am sure he will be able to help.

This is an appeal to members attending the GDSF Horticultural working area.
We are likely to be a bit short of items to display in the marquee this year, if you are coming to the show we would welcome any items to show in the marquee during the week.
Hand tools or machinery welcome.
Look forward to seeing any members visiting during the week, I…[Read more] -

Peter, your type 5 sounds very similar to mine, I don’t think they ever revved very fast as they had plenty of torque at low revs. Is that original paintwork? or has it been ‘restored’ in the past. There is hardly a scrap of paint on mine, and I am going to leave it just coated with linseed oil mix.

Hi there.
Could these members of the Fisk family be related to Peter Fisk who has a smallholding in Thurston, Suffolk. he shows Chrysanths and grows a lot of veg. But i guess it is a pretty common name in that area. There is a clematis nursery owned by a Fisk. And I used to know a Derek Fisk who was a top man in the world of Stock car racing. -

Hi there Chriscross
I did find a few years ago, that by burning along the base of a wire netting fence, that it upset the galvanising and the base of the fence quickly went rusty. So beware !!

I believe the landmaster Lion was the largest model, it used the same JAP 500 engine as fitted to the Howard Gem of the period, one of our ex members in Sussex has a Hawk which I seem to remember had a Villiers 40 engine.

Hello Charlie
Allman sprayers are still operating out of Chichester, maybe they could date them for you. but looking at the engines I too would guess late 50s.

Hi ted20
The Howard -Clifford Hako was only supplied with a single sheet of instructions as far as I know. I am not sure if they ever produced a workshop manual, I have a Hako that runs really well, and I might have a JLO book somewhere, Rather busy this weekend, but I will look when I have 5 minutes.
Best of luck with the engine, sounds like a…[Read more]

Good luck Steve, I hope it is a success this year. We would be there if there was not such a distance between us, we enjoyed it last time.
I recommend the weekend to all horticultural machinery collectors, even if you don’t have a working machine JUST GO AND VISIT Tea and cake is excellent.

hortiman replied to the topic Trusty Earthquake Tines in the forum Pedestrian operated machines 10 years, 1 month ago
Hello there
The green painted tines are obviously from the Dowdeswell factory, meaning that they were made for one of the Howard range of cultivators. The ones with the longer blade are for a Howard 300/350/352, and the ones with the shorter blade are the centre row of blades for the same range of models. The Bantam if i remember correctly are…[Read more] -

Hi there warmsteel.
Looking at my list I see that the machine listed as 11038 was made in late 1956/early1957. The first ones were made in 1954.Hope this is useful information for you,
Best of luck with it.I have a JAP 2a that came from a Bullfinch if you are desperate for a replacement.
