No, this one is fitted with the plastic inlet that is screwed onto the carb body. The storm shield that you refer to s still available but not fitted the case of this engine.
Would you believe the engine on this beast was designed to run on a 10:1 fuel mix I guess smoke and oil pollution was not too high on the agenda back when these engines were…[Read more] -

This may not be strictly horticultural but as it is 47 years old and the carb was made by Villiers I thought you may be interested to see what I have been sorting out a few problems on. The machine is a British Seagull model Forty Plus Long shaft outboard motor.

I have found that some maintenance sprays are also good for proving that an engine is able to run, one that i use is marketed by Morrison’s and is around £2 a tin. See tin in attached photo not the chainsaw that is another story all of it’s own. You do have to be experiment to find sprays that work for instance WD40 does not seem to fire up.

It may help to give the engine some work to do like ploughing or cultivating, this would get the engine up to working temperature and hopefully burn off the carry over that you have seen.
You also need to consider the past history of the tractor i.e. Was it smoking when last run by the previous owner! Is this why it was laid up for ten years? -

Well you found the photograph the link above takes you to the text to go with it.
I think the OLC site also has a video of one at work. -

Mine has arrived safely it was well packaged, clearly addressed and well put together. So well packaged that I actually received two copies of the magazine in the one envelope! I wonder who got the empty pack?
If it needs to be forwarded on let me know, otherwise I shall pass it on to to a likely candidate.

I quite agree a few hours ploughing will clean it up really well, especially if the soil is dry and stony but if it is wet and claggy some pre cleaning will make all the difference to how the the soil turns over.
Definitely follow Wristpins advice re greasing the shiny bits after use though. -

To clean up the mouldboard of the plough I would try to use an abrasive flap disc fitted to an angle grinder or failing that a flap wheel in an electric drill. An angle grinder with a grinding disc fitted would be too fierce and would remove the metal rather than just the corrosion. Which ever method you use please wear some eye protection and a…[Read more]

I don’t pretend to know anything about Ransomes Dumpers but here are few thoughts that may help to jog your memory.
Does the hole pass all of the way through the item and is it parallel all the way? If so it could be a support for a control rod or similar.
Is the end of the hexagon sealed off or only has a small hole in which case it may be…[Read more]

It is good see that this project is still live, I remember the first posting of it in the
old forum.
I guess that it is a balancing act with such machines between battery capacity and current demands, the more batteries needed the heavier the machine gets and so more costly to build. Traction batteries as used in fork trucks are a fearful price…[Read more] -

But it will still make a talking point on one of your displays – even if it does not work very well.

Well spotted, certainly deserves a chance to retire into your collection. It is an item that was probably made in fairly large numbers and many will by now been consigned to the scrap pile.
Try trimming your lawn edges with it and you will not need one of those foam stress balls that upwardly mobile executives like to have on their desks!!

I could be barking up the wrong tree here but I think nigel is referring to the strangely named freshness column. I noticed earlier that there was something odd going on but I figured that it would soon sort it self out.

That’s ok pleased to help, next mystery to solve is the plastic air intake cowl, it looks rather like a plastic pudding basin! But then we have not yet seen all of it so we await further instalments.

Hi, not exactly sure which Atco mower model you have there but I am sure someone out there in forum land will have the answer. However it seems to be a nice straight example with the grassbox looking as though it has led a very sheltered life and it will make a good stable mate for the Atco rotary.

Do I sense that this machine could for static display only? Unless you can aerate the arena as you parade the machine.
