The original twin cylinder engine used on the Howard Gem was their own design. Earlier examples did use a V twin engine. Someone did have all the information on a website but I think they took the site down due to spam attacks.

We are aware of the ‘fake’machine and a follow on article will appear in the December issue warning members of the perils of relying on unverified information on the internet or in print.

The information I have does not list a 676B, it does have a 576B which was fitted to JAP 4/2, 5 & 6 engines. I have copied what information I have, see attached, it could be someone has fitted an alternative magneto.

William, the click you are listening for is the magneto impulse. Not all magnetos are fitted with them, it nay be that it is the wrong magneto. There should be a small plate on the magneto giving type, if you could post that up on here it will help identify what magneto you have. Also which model of Petter A, and serial number as looking at the…[Read more]

An interesting question. I suspect the answer is no one knows as it is a scenario that has not come up before. I am sure there would be some interest. It is worth noting that a new machine would not be eligible for a prize in a vintage class.

All I know relates to W L Bartrop. They were agricultural engineers and ironmongers in Highworth, the town I was born near to. Some photographs of the shop and works can be seen on the Highworth Historical Society website
I also remember seeing one of the Greenfield tractors at a vintage rally held near Highworth around 2003. -

You have come to the right place. We have a number of members with knowledge of Ransomes crawlers, including one that can supply spare parts.
I would suggest you start by getting a copy of the parts list and owners manual.

Is it an earth terminal or a stud for mounting the capacitor, which may also be an earth? I don’t see any reason why it would need an earth other than safety.

Insurance for rally field and shows is not quite the same as for the road, machine does not need to be registered or taxed etc. Use machine serial number to identify it. Try some of the insurers that advertise in magazines such as Tractor & Machinery. When I had an MG2 I insured it with the NFU. Note call centre staff may not have a clue about RTA…[Read more]

Having consulted with our insurance rep the view is that all ride on machines need appropriate RTA insurance. Although it is a members only event other users of the site have access to areas machines will be in. The insurance provided as part of membership is Public Liability only.
