Sorry to hear your tale of woe! I know the 2-stroke is the better machine but I can’t help myself!
I’m glad you said about the high speed adventures, I was sure I remembered you could change the gears to allow high speed trailering. Sometimes the old memory doesn’t let me down!
Keep us posted if you have better luck!

Excellent! How do you find the Hirth in its comparative old age! I have very fond memories of the one I used.

Thanks gents both. I should have had my idle moment sooner! Still you never know, one day. It’s only a daft reason but the Hirth was the first machine I used as a kid. Never an easy starter, especially after I tipped it over and it ran flat out on the oil! After that I was the only one who could start it so if I was going to school I had to s…[Read more]

In an idle moment this afternoon (nice to be down to a four day week!) I read on a posting on the old forum only 2400 odd of these machines were made over a very short sales period. They are a really good machine. Anyone out there know why they had such a short run? Presumably only a very few Hirth diesel options were sold as they must have been…[Read more]

Thanks Chris. Well worth waiting for! They really look the part on the field, can’t wait to have a bash!
Don’t think I could bear to part with one, even if I had two, Andy! -

Thanks Tom
It’s certainly a lovely machine! I’m planning at least Stanfield and Little Ellingham in Norfolk and Weeley, hopefully some others as well. If you let me know in advance if you are going to any I’ll make sure I bring the plough.
Andy said he thought you used the plough “floating “ ie not secured against sideways movement. I think as…[Read more] -

Thanks Charlie, good to know where it first went.
Man after my own heart Dave, but if I find I can keep straight might enter a competition for a laugh. Might pick up the prize for the worst attempt! -

This new SIMAR is an early one. Serial 560040 must make it 1948. Hopefully Charlie will be able to provide information from the records. Be interesting to know where she went when new.

Hi Dave
As long as you promise not to laugh at my first attempts with a proper plough, and weather permitting, I’ll be at both.

From memory of a long time ago the Hirth does get difficult to start. Usually needs the starting fuse and a really strong rapid crank over. They seem to have a relatively poor reputation amongst those who know (ie VHGMC members!)
But the 700 Hirth is a very rare beast now. Obviously if you can’t start it you’ve got little choice. But if it cou…[Read more] -

By coincidence got my entry in the post yesterday. I’ll be there making a load of noise as usual! Probably bring the latest acquisition (SIMAR 50) and if I can get longer ramps organised the Howard Hatz Gem.
This is a really good start to the working event season. Well worth a trip for those of you further away. Can’t recommend it highly enough. -

10s holy grail as far as I’m concerned. How is the renovation going on yours Charlie? Don’t suppose your documents show how many 10s were imported over here?
