Hi Charlie.
I think your machine is a Barford Power scythe that has been modified, using other Barford parts, wheels etc. In fact it looks to be a more usable machine.

Hi there Plonker,
If it has the rotavator unit fitted, it would be about 4 cwt in old money!. -

Could it be a design exercise? The airfilter would look more at home in a post war Morris car.
It looks a bit like something from the Monro stable ?

Could also be worth checking that all the tiny holes are clear in the jet tube, and that the needle is not out of true. soak the cerb in brake cleaner and blow with a good air line. ( mind your eyes )

I guess it was an earlier model than the type 5. Any clues to the make of the engine ?
I know there was/is a long established tree nursery close to Rotherfield, it was latterly part of the ‘Coblands group’

Do you know where it worked in Sussex Charlie ?, I guess a machine of that size would have been on a commercial nursery or a big private garden/ estate.
Not sur when Monro took over the dealership, I know my Father bought his 30 from Monro before the war.

I have got a pair in the barn, I should say not a matching pair, as they have different tread patterns, they are on Plowmate wheels which could be an advantage!
Let me know if they are of any interest. There is a bit of surface cracking but they seem to hold air ok. -

Looks like a good find Charlie, I hope it will remain in it’s working clothes !!
I bought one of those lifts last year, they really transform the job.

In the days when we used to run one of these on our Nursery, we had to put upper cylinder lubricant (Redex) in with the fuel toprevent it happening.

I would suggest looking on the ‘Old Lawnmower Club’ site.
I think it is a Greens ‘master’ mower made by Thomas Greens. -

Everyone with an interest in Trusty products should purchase the excellent book recently published by our esteemed Chairman( and secretary) Geoff Ravenhall, it really is a very interesting and well presented publication, super rare photos of obscure Trusty products and masses of history, including the origins of Tractors(London)Ltd. Well done…[Read more]

Hi Geoff.
I am afraid I will be unable to attend the AGM this year, please make my apologies, I have damaged nerves, ligaments etc in my left leg, I have been on crutches since before Christmas, and it looks like a slow job. Please also reserve a copy of the Trusty book for me, I will contact you about posting it to me.
Apologies and kind regards
