Charlie , I’m fairly certain it’s soldered directly to the coil.

This is a Shay with a Bux? engine. The HT lead was corroded and fell off leaving just this stub of stiff wire sticking out from the coil.
Has anyone come across this type before?
My question is, does the lead screw onto this stub in the same way some plug caps do or would it be soldered to the stub? -

Very sad news. I bought Geoff’s Trusty books only relatively recently, and he left me a kind note inside one of them. Moreover he always gave a detailed and knowledgable answer to my questions on this forum.
I am sure he will be missed. My thoughts to his family

When Mountfield Plugged In
A while ago, this blog looked at Vertex engines. These were two-stroke engines which made their way onto Mountfield mowers in the mid-1970s. It was not a […] -

I tried leather as had it at hand but wrongly used the crocodile fasteners, soon found out they only like going round to bend in one direction over pulleys so the tensioner soon destroyed fastener and belt, I did get it right as have laminated and glued leather for large cone clutches and worked, one hadn’t needed attention in 60 years use so work…[Read more]

You can make your own from a suitable leather fashion belt , I did this with Father-in-laws Plowmate , glued it together with an industrial glue , a little bit of trial and error getting length right , but can assure you it will work well.

My Grand father used one for years and then got a Ransoms that wasn’t ideal late 50’s got a David Brown 2D that ran rings around the crawler, I resurrected the plough Mate in the 60s it was easier to use than most and soon put a wheel up front so if need be going anywhere went in reverse. Belt got bad and Fenner just glued one it worked for a…[Read more]

Thanks Andy. I have zero experience with farm machines, but decades of servicing motor and pedal cycles behind me. I suspected I knew the answer to my question and was seeking confirmation of my suspicion – which you have given. Only decision now is whether to do the work myself or pop the gearbox in the boot and take it over to someone who…[Read more]

I’ve never worked on BCS boxes , all I can say is that ANY wear or play in rotor boxes will result in worn seals , so it’s vital to replace both seals and bearings……..this advice is based on 50yrs of working on Howard rotavators.

Hi folks. Our BCS 737 is border-line vintage, dating as it does from 1995. I have an issue with the tiller unit which is one of our favourite tools here at Sims Hill Shared Harvest, in Bristol. I was carrying out some maintenance prior to the growers using the tiller ahead of the winter crops when I noticed that the tiller axle has a lot of play.…[Read more]
